Poker machine proposal sparks opposition in adelaide CBD

The proposed $14.4 million 'poker machine' proposal for the Adelaide CBD could be the first such venue in Australia.

The proposed 'poker machine' casino at the Adelaide Cathedral would be situated in the CBD, close to the church and the main public areas of the cathedral.


But with the planned site, which is close to the Adelaide Cathedral's existing building, and in the centre of a largely residential neighbourhood, critics have raised concerns about whether a casino could be built close to the Cathedral itself.

The developer of the 'poker machine' proposal for the Adelaide Cathedral, Andrew Noh, said he had already engaged the local planning board in its ongoing inquiry and would consider all options with the cathedral's church.

'Obviously it's a matter of principle. If it's going to happen there it should be to the church, for all the residents of Adelaide, church or no church,' Mr Noh said on Sunday.


'We've looked at all different options, whether it is in another part of the city, the suburbs or the CBD.


'Whether it's within walking distance of the cathedral or outside of it. The cathedral is very important to our community.'

Mr Noh said he was committed to holding a public hearing on the matter with the cathedral's church, and is also considering other options to secure the site.

As the 'poker machine' project is to be built for the first time in Adelaide, it would create a new legal grey area with regard to the activities surrounding gaming in this city. The gambling industry would need the permission of the Victorian government before the machine could be used at the cathedral, and any developer should be aware that it would need a court order to operate. The Victorian government is considering issuing an anti-money laundering (AML) notice for any development, including for this type of venue.


The church has urged opposition to the poker machine to not stop here, calling it an inappropriate venue for a casino.


'The cathedral is the site of many religious services, many other businesses, numerous people congregate and the presence of gaming machines close to the church and other functions of that sort is very disruptive and would not be conducive to community harmony,' Archbishop William Hill said on Friday, according to the Sunday Mail.
